God in Abraham’s life
Genesis 12, 8
Building altars.
When we look at Abraham’s life we notice his very close fellowship with God. Abraham was building altars and was calling upon the Name of the Lord. In fact the only things we are told that he built were altars. For example we do not read that he was building palaces. At the end of his life he had also built a grave for Sarah.Wherever he went he built an altar and related every event in his life to God. As a result of examining the altars built by Abraham we can make an outline of his life.
Abraham worshipped God. It was his most important occupation. For example, he worshipped him when:
- He came back from Egypt (Genesis 13, 2-4);
- He saw the size of the Promised Land (Genesis 13, 14-18);
- The Lord was revealed to him and changed his name from Abram to Abraham (Genesis 17, 3-5);
- He made a covenant with Abimelech in Beer-Sheba (Genesis 21, 33).
Building altars was not an easy task. One needed stones and mortar. But the most difficult time for building an altar took place on Mount Moriah. Building this altar perhaps did not brake his backbone but his heart. He knew that this altar he was building, was for his own son. In the eyes of God Abraham had offered his son. The lamb did not appear there by chance. God had provided the Lamb.
Blessing of Gratitude
1. Gratitude is an expression of spiritual life
Luke 17, 11-18
Where are the nine?
2. Gratitude brings glory to God
Acts 3, 7-11
We encourage others by being thankful.
At the feet of the Lord Jesus
1. FORGIVENESS OF SINS – Luke 7, 38
Though the Pharisee had invited the Lord Jesus into his home, he never sat down at His feet. He wanted to sit with Him at the table. The woman had not invited the Lord Jesus to her home (perhaps she had no home), but she was aware of her biggest problem: sin. She knew she needed forgiveness of sins. She had brought her sins to the feet of the Lord Jesus.
THE LORD JESUS IS GOD WHO FORGIVES SIN!
2. RIGHT TEACHING – Luke 10, 39
Mary knew that she had to learn. It was Martha who welcomed the Lord Jesus to their home in Bethany, but it was Mary who sat down at the Lord Jesus’ feet. Learning requires concentration. It is true that it was not Mary who invited the Lord Jesus, but she took a place which was the best for her the feet of Jesus! It was a ‘better portion’ (Luke 10, 42).
THE LORD JESUS IS GOD WHO IS TRUTH, KNOWS US AND LOVES US!
